Poverty and wealth

I don't think that God wants us to be poor. If that is what will help us be humble, hard working, and kinder then fine, but I think he wants us to learn to handle wealth. After all, how can we handle ultimate power if we can't handle wealth appropriately? However, I'd rather be in poverty and good than wealthy and bad.

You know dad, on Sunday in our lesson one of the quotes from Prophet Joseph Smith was in regards to that. Something to the effect of to help the hearts of the poor "administer to their wants."
Now I can see part of that, it really is hard to stay focused on anything spiritual when my thoughts are always "How will I pay my bills this month?" or "How can I choose between buying food or paying tithing?"
Even though the spiritual would help for trusting the Lord and whatnot it is not something that is easy to do. I have friends that struggle with "How can they say God loves me when all I get is more debt and more struggles so I can't get out of bondage because of medical debt or loss of a job that was not planned?"
I understand that wants are different from needs but when your wants are just the everyday needs...
